Like with all methods to accomplishing tasks, one of the first steps is always research, and to buy keywords, it's no different. To begin a keyword marketing campaign with Google or another Search Engine, you must do keyword research. It's important that you understand why this research is necessary.
In any business, you must make profit, and reduce expenses. In search marketing with keywords, when you want high rankings on certain keywords in order to attract the best audience, you still need to keep in mind that not every keyword is optimized for your target audience. Thus, you have to find the audience who is looking for the very product that you are trying to sell. However, you must do this at minimum cost, by selecting the top keywords that provide the highest CTRs and convert into sales.
Here I will list the 5 Reasons why you should always do Keyword Research before starting to buy keywords or beging your keyword marketing campaign.
1. Basic keywords are high competition, but low conversion rates
It's easy to be impressed by the massive traffic that certain keywords attain. Unfortunately, this traffic shouldn't impress you at all, because this traffic will not help your keyword marketing turn into sales. Generally, those who search for basic terms are not looking to buy a product, but rather to gain understanding on the search term. Just take a look at the organic results and you will see why. For many keywords, the first place result is a page from Wikipedia. That is because Wikipedia is a massive information centre. The other results are also similar in that they rarely are trying to sell a product, but only to provide information. In fact, most single, basic keywords are all searched by people looking for information, definitions, etc. These people are not looking to buy your product, and if they do see your ad, their curiosity may take them to your website, but is highly unlikely to turn into sales. Although a small portion of the searchers will still be interested, the amount of money required to advertise on search engine results pages of basic keywords is simply too much for the potential returns on your keyword marketing campaign.
2. Nobody clicks on an irrelevant ad
Some keywords/keyword phrases have no advertiser competition at all, and the cost will be extremely low. In a keyword bidding system like AdWords from Google, when there's little advertiser competition, the keyword ranking of your ad becomes very high, at a low cost. Unfortunately, some of these keyword phrases are not targeted simply because the searchers are not interested in buying your product. Targeting such keyword phrases to rank high is meaningless because your ad is irrelevant, and will not provide value to the searcher, resulting in no sales conversion. If you buy keywords for irrelevant searches/information then you'd be wasting your money if somebody clicked your ad, and waste your time setting up this part of the campaign.
3. Long Tail searches can result in higher conversion
Many times, a long tail search with a long keyword phrase can result in low competition advertising that can convert into sales easily. Many times, the searcher is looking for your product or a similar product, and so this is a perfect chance to buy keywords and make sure your ad is keyword optimized to lead to high conversion rates. Keyword popularity sometimes doesn't affect your sales as much as the interest behind those keywords and phrases. The popularity of a keyword simply indicates how much a keyword phrase is searched for, not whether the keyword is truly profitable. by targeting long tails, you can easily find out whether the searcher is a potential customer or not, and optimize ads to target the appropriate audience. the only way to find out truly which long tails are used, and to get the best long tail keywords, is to do keyword research and analyze which keywords are truly profitable for your business. With keyword research, you can find out exactly what people are searching for, and how they search for it, thus achieving higher conversion rates on well targeted ad placements for good keywords.
4. Find New profitable Keyword ideas that you didn't think of
A businessman or the seller of a product, unlike a customer searches for products in different ways. While there are keyword search terms that an industry expert would use to quickly locate exactly what they are looking for, it is not the same for a customer. Many customers have no idea which search terms are industry specific, and how they can find the product they want. This is why a good online business requires keyword research to find new keywords unknown to them, or find search keywords that a customer would use. If you don't target customers when they are specifically looking for the product you want to sell, then you are missing out on a lot of potential sales, whereas your competitor could be getting all of those potential sales.
5. Find Misspellings of keywords and profit from them
Not all searches are done with correct spelling, and many searches end up misspelled either because the searcher didn't know how to spell it or because it was a typo or some other reason. Thus there is a lot of traffic coming from misspelled keyword search phrase terms, and it's up to you to take advantage of that. Most advertisers don't realize that misspelling can add a lot of value to their keyword advertising campaign, and thus don't bid on misspelled keyword search terms. This is a woeful mistake, and because of this mistake, the knowledgeable can take advantage of low keyword bidding prices and get many more potential customers. To do this, you need to find the keywords that are searched for frequently, and also how customers are misspelling them. Then, you can target these good keywords and convert into sales. This requires keyword research, and an analysis of all the keywords that you use, in order to find the keywords that could be misspelled.
For those reasons, it is important to do keyword research first, and analyze all the keywords you use, to maximize the efficiency of a keyword marketing/advertising campaign. It will help you to optimize keywords, rank higher, and convert more potential customers.
